4,600 MW is the grid's business, not the household's. Two procurement lanes, two thresholds.

South Africa put battery storage at the front of its procurement queue in October. But 4,600 MW is the grid's business — not the household's. Those are two different trades, and conflating them produces bad go-to-market decisions.

TWO PROCUREMENT LANES, TWO BUYERS
1. Government procurement — progressing through IRP determinations, with defined scale but longer processes: tenders, evaluation, grid connection, PPAs.
2. Eskom strategic partnerships — the national utility plans to select up to 6 GW of renewable and battery storage partners by 2030, on a separate track.

Neither buyer is a household.

GRID-SCALE BESS: TRACK RECORD OVER SPEC SHEETS
Utility-scale evaluation tends to concentrate on system integration capability and built projects, grid connection and dispatch compliance, financing and performance guarantees, and local content requirements. For a residential-focused supplier, the binding constraint isn't whether you can build the product — it's whether you have verifiable projects in operation. Without that, the tender stage gets hard.

RESIDENTIAL: REAL DEMAND, DIFFERENT LOGIC
South Africa's home storage demand has always been grounded in reliability. Three traits: the pitch is backup, not arbitrage — unlike Europe's self-consumption and price arbitrage; off-grid and hybrid configurations are more common; price sensitivity is sharply tiered, so product tiers beat one-size-fits-all.

TWO JUDGEMENTS FOR SUPPLIERS
Want grid-scale? Build a track record first — entering via local EPC or system integrator supply chains is more realistic than bidding alone. Want residential? Go deep on channel — local spare-parts and technical support land better than datasheet numbers. Doing both at once tends to leave both shallow.

WHAT TO WATCH
Tender documents and technical thresholds; local content and O&M requirements; grid codes for utility and distributed storage. All subject to official South African publications.
