Home Storage Market Trends: Regulation & Retrofit Shifts in Poland, UK & Australia

Recent regulatory shifts in Poland, the UK, and Australia show compliance and retrofit compatibility are now defining product-market fit in residential storage. From Poland's PLN 1B subsidy to UK's BS 7671 spatial restrictions and Australia's 500,000+ installs, location and compatibility outweigh raw capacity.

Three European and APAC markets moved on home storage within two weeks — and the common thread is regulation, not incentives.

POLAND — Applications open tomorrow
A subsidy of roughly PLN 1 billion (≈US$258M) opens on 20 October and runs to 1 October 2027. Batteries must be ≥10 kWh; the target group is households that already have solar, so this is a retrofit sale.

UNITED KINGDOM — New rules in force since 15 Oct
BS 7671 Amendment 4 is now live. Lofts, bedrooms, escape routes and basements without external access are off-limits; outdoor units must sit ≥1 m from doors, windows and vents. Location is now the first design question, not capacity.

AUSTRALIA — Past 500,000 installs
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program has passed 500,000 units. In H1 2026 alone: 276,011 batteries (+52%). Most telling is the ratio — 153 batteries for every 100 new solar systems — which means existing solar owners are retrofitting. Funding now sits at A$7.2B, targeting 2 million homes by 2030, with eligibility spanning 5–100 kWh.

What it means for suppliers: compliance is becoming product-market fit. Location guidance, retrofit compatibility and delivery certainty now weigh more than headline specs.
