Australia Crosses 500,000 Home Battery Milestone as Solar Retrofits Surge

Australia has officially crossed the 500,000 home battery mark under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. With one in three households equipped with rooftop solar, residential storage demand is accelerating through system retrofits.
Australia just crossed a milestone worth noting: more than 500,000 home batteries have been installed under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
With more than one in three households already having rooftop solar, Australia has the world's highest rooftop solar uptake — and batteries are now catching up fast.
• 276,011 — home batteries installed in H1 2026 alone, up 52% on the previous half
• 153 — batteries installed for every 100 new solar systems, meaning existing solar owners are retrofitting, not just new installs
• A$7.2B — program funding, expanded from an initial A$2.3B, targeting 2 million homes by 2030
For suppliers and distributors, the signal is structural: demand has shifted from "new solar + battery" to "existing solar + retrofit," and subsidy eligibility spans 5–100 kWh — covering most mainstream residential capacity bands.
