Past 500,000 installs, Australia's home storage race moved from capacity specs to compatibility, compliance and delivery.
All Energy Australia opens in Melbourne in two days. If you're going, the questions worth asking aren't about capacity — they're about three things reshaping how this market competes.
First, the baseline: Australia has passed 500,000 home battery installs, more than one in three households has rooftop solar, and H1 2026 alone added 276,011 units (+52%). The ratio that matters most: 153 batteries for every 100 new solar systems — which means existing solar owners are retrofitting. Demand isn't the constraint. Execution is.
TREND 1 — High-voltage is becoming the default
51.2V systems now dominate Australian residential installs. Smaller currents mean lighter cabling and lower install cost; efficiency is higher; cabinets fit the garages and utility rooms common in Australian homes. The question to ask: how deep does the safety architecture go, and is there third-party test documentation?
With a 153% attach ratio, most projects start with an existing inverter. Brand, model and firmware vary enormously. CAN/RS485 compatibility lists, single-phase vs three-phase, grid-tied vs backup — these determine whether a system can be installed at all. Great specs don't help a system that won't fit.
TREND 3 — Compliance is becoming the gate
The UK's loft-ban rules taking effect on 15 October signalled a shift: installation location, fire separation and clearance are moving from guidance into mandatory code. Australian states differ on grid approval and install rules. Suppliers now need to deliver installable solutions, not just products.
Three things to do on the floor: bring your own compatibility questions, verify install claims against real project conditions, and check localisation depth — certifications, spare-parts stock, after-sales response.
